Star Trek Blog (Blog 18)

"Live long and Prosper"
This quote from the movie actually is in the mission statement of one of my favorite rappers. A quote like this is a constant reminder that there is meaning to life.

"All of you people should know that the captain cannot cheat death"
Death is liberating, isn't it? Spock knows what's up!

"Rule 619"
I think this was the bit where Spock describe that whoever is emotionally unstable has to immediately step down fro the position of captain. What the world seems to forget that the everyone has feelings and certain actions affect people. We're not robots.

"What is necessary is never unwise"
I don't remember who said this, but it is a nice quote.

"I am better" "At What?" "Everything."
I personally like this quote.

Anime Boston 2014 (blog 17)

Conventions are a fun way to, well, have fun. Anime Boston has been doing just that for about over 10 years now. Since the year 2003 or so, Anime Boston was a place where people from just about any place can meet up and share a common thread for the weekend. This convention had various things from watching different anime to the people dressing up as some of the characters from the anime itself! This was going to be my first year so you already know that my hype for this trip was through the freaking roof! Anime Boston's total number of attendees reached over 25,000 people, and I am proud to say that i was 1 of them.

Now I know what you may be thinking. "But David, how can you enjoy a weekend of just anime?" It is surprisingly easy. Anime Boston has a schedule believe it or not, and it was entirely up to you to decide which activities you wanted to go to. Besides the actual watching of anime, there were things like segments of getting better at cosplaying, meet and greets with certain people of some shows, fan panels , and even a game room! Plenty of stuff to do, so I was certainly busy. The one thing that stuck out to me, and probably the people that went to it, was something unexpected.
                                               Kill La Kill
So there was this panel during the opening day about this somewhat controversial show called "Kill la Kill". Now this panel was suppose to be an introduction to show, so keep that in mind. The first 15-45 minutes was a reasonable and yet simple explanation of how the show is. The next 60-90 minutes was when the fun happened. Q and A's is obligatory in almost any panel, so this one was not an exception. The questions some people had were spoiling the show, to down right insulting the speaker of the panel. If you can have people in their late 20 to early 30's yell and complain at one another over as something as a show, that is what I call controversial!

The Weekend had its own ups and downs, but i enjoyed myself nonetheless. Anime Boston happens every year. you should go to one! As a matter of fact, just to go the one next year. AB 2015 will take place April 3rd- April 5th. If you like to watch anime, or you just want to be loud and crazy as you want, there is nothing stopping you from seeing me there next year!

The Matrix and Buddhism

Being a computer programmer might be the best job ever. especially if you are a hacker at night and goes by the name of Neo. Thomas Anderson is always the person you need for the job. then one day, he gets a wake up call from Morpheus, the greatest computer hacker in the world. That starts off the movie of the famous title of "The Matrix" "To do no evil; To cultivate good; To purify one's mind; This is the teaching of the Buddhas" The word Buddhism translated means "awakening" Siddhartha Gautama was always searching for nirvana. comparing Neo's life and the Buddha's life, we can sense a connection between the two

Neo's life would probably never be the same ever again. In the Movie, he is given a choice by Morpheus to take the blue pill or the red pill. In fact, he always has a choice to do something. Buddhism is applied into the making of the movie this way. Buddhism in short, can be described as leading a moral life filled with awareness and thoughts development and understanding. One quote in the movie that seems to sum up all of Neil's actions is "Can I go back?" "No, but would you really want to?" Neil's decision to take the red pill is always questioned and he is always questioning himself. The reason behind this is probably the reason is that he would have taken the blue pill instead. The symbolic reason that there is a red pill and the blue pill can be related to Buddhism.

Buddhists ultimate goal in life is to reach Nirvana and Neil is always making the choices to try and get there. he chooses the red pill and that can be taken as suffering and hardships and reincarnation and the blue pill is the path to nirvana. That is why Neil questions himself a lot. He wants to reach nirvana. "There's a difference between knowing the path and walking it."He knows that nirvana is the road less taken and he wants to go back

Groundhog day 5 stages of Grief (blog 15)

How would it feel to wake up to the same day every day? Would you crack up and not handle the stress of it all? Exploit others with what you learned about them the day before? Or use the situation to better yourself? That is what Phil Conners played by Bill Murray is going through in the movie of Groundhog Day. Using the Elisabeth Kubler Ross model, we will see the 5 stages of grief e has expressed through out the film

The First stage in the cycle is Denial. Phil as done that by simply by just saying that this is not real to his coworker. When someone does not want to accept any fact that they are not ready for, the person will resort to reject any information.

The second stage in the cycle is anger. it was simple, "Phil?! Phil Conners!?" was the dude that just sucker punched without even knowing what he did wrong, if it had just been a regular day. Phil Conners was angry at the fact that he did not know what was going on at the time and he got flustered.

The third stage is denial. Phil hijacked a car. That was pretty much all he had to do. Knowing that he was going to relive the same day, he might as well take some people with him so he can try to get himself out of there.

The 4th stage is depression. After so much time has passed, why not decide to end I all? Phil Conners repeatedly kill himself knowing that he has nothing to live for.

the last stage is acceptance. If Phil was going to be here for a while, why not benefit from it? He started robbing a bank, taking piano lessons, and tried to get the perfect date with his coworker. Phil knows all too well that he had nothing to lose.

XV pop culture mixtape

What better way is there to have a picture definition of self reflection than to have your favorite major pop icons watching TV? that is what rapper XV intended in the mix tape called pop culture. society has an influence on people today and arguably has too much. XV has taken that into account and decided to use this work of art to express the idea of Immanuel Kant's concept of moral duty.

Looking into this picture, you have characters such as Goku, Snookie, Beavus and Butthead, the bald guy from breaking bad, and others plopped in the living room of the Simpsons' house. And right in the middle you have XV, bad over his head chilling as well. Some may argue when looking at the picture that the artist has become a pop icon. Maybe if XV did not have the paper bag over his head, i would agree. With it, he does not like to associate what other pop icons are doing nor does he want to know whats going on. Following the way of Immanuel Kant, he is saying how these people do not follow moral duty and these people are being watching everyday. XV is here, telling them that they are not doing their job correctly. XV is their wake up call.

Every one, yes and i mean every one, want to be famous or at least get their 15 minutes of fame once in their lifetime. How people do with it is another story. if you take the time to listen to XV's mix tape, he'll tell you how he's going to do with it.

The Truman Show and philosophy (blog 12)

"In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight!" Showing "The Truman Show" right before Christmas vacation really was a great way to end the week. I don't know how old this movie was, but it was sure a movie ahead of its time. I hope the writer for this movie got to make other good movies such as this.

needed 2 weeks of vacation (blog 11)

Oh my goodness, it is a year new! The only time people can fail at something and it is completely okay with it. And I'm talking about new years resolution. Hope you guys had a happy holidays and we can proceed to bring a bigger bang than we did last year.

Out of these two weeks of vacation, I found sometime that I would like to bring up and talk about. It is this one little anime called "Golden Time". I picked it up a couple days ago and I was insanely hooked. It really isn't watch people expect anime to be.

Tada Banri, is a newly accepted student at a private law school in Tokyo. Too bad a terrible accident immediately after high school graduation caused Tada to have some type of amnesia and to become lost in transition to his 1st day of class. He soon finds out that he isn't the only lost one. He soon meets a dude name Mitsuo and instantly, boom. Friends. somehow they get their within a good amount of time and right at the front of the school, a stylish, beautiful and well dressed girl in a dress arrives with a bouquet of flowers. Her name is Koko and the 1st thing she does is slaps Mitsuo with the flowers. As kids, Koko and Mitsuo promised to marry each other. regretting the decision, Mitsuo secretly applies to the private law school in order to escape. Now, his pasts comes to haunt him.

If you hadn't been fond of watching Japanese cartoons. give this one a shot. I'm not so sure when it will end but, I don't want it to. Even if you don't like the show, the intro and outro to the show will!
